Bobby's Pantry Switching to Paper and Reusable Bags

January 31, 2017

Bobby’s Pantry, the food pantry run through the Perry Township Trustee’s office, will be switching to cloth and paper bags beginning on February 1, 2017. This is part of an effort to reduce waste and use more environmentally sustainable materials.

The Trustee encourages anyone visiting the food pantry to bring their re-usable bags in when they come for groceries. The Township has also purchased 500 reusable bags with the name “Bobby’s Pantry” on them to distribute with food over the next few months. If you visit the Pantry and receive one or more of these bags with your food, try to bring these bags back with you each time you visit for food.

In January 2017, the pantry gave out 477 plastic grocery bags of food to residents of the Township. In 2016, the pantry gave out an average of 373 bags of food each month. These plastic bags were often donated by employees and clients of the office, or collected from recycling sites at local grocery stores. The Township also purchased new plastic bags when these supplies were low. If you have donated plastic bags to the pantry in the past, in the future please recycle these bags at appropriate recycling sites. You can also contact other area pantries to see if they accept plastic bag donations. Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard (812-355-6843) currently accepts plastic bags and is located at 1100 W. Allen St.

Bobby’s Pantry has been providing food to residents of the Township for at least 20 years. Perry Township residents are allowed to get food every 30 days, and must bring in their ID and proof of their address dated within the last 30 days each time they come in for food.

Over 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide each year, which is over 1 million bags per minute. Americans generate 32 million pounds of plastic waste annually.
