Dan updates the board on the homeless situation. He states that he spoke with the director of the Indiana Civil Liberties Union who sent him to their legal director and was told that anyone who is damaged by the city’s action who wants to talk to the ACLU needs to go directly to him. They don’t support governments though, but the information has been sent to Shalom; two other individuals’ names have also been given to us. We have a meeting set up with them in the near future.
There are now signs up at the park stating where the homeless can go for help and our name is on the list, however, we aren’t exactly able to offer them anything, since we have a three-day decision process and can only help with rent and utilities. The final eviction day for the park is January 11, 2021. The city did meet with funders and providers to say that they have met with them, but they did not come to a consensus, nor did they take the advice from the funders or providers.
Dan dismissed the township’s lawyer, so a new lawyer may be needed in the future. Dan asked the Board that $15,000 of the $30,000 budgeted in 2020 for the 2021 COVID/Emergency money in Township funds be allowed for assistance in resolving the issue of park sleepers.
The meeting was concluded at 4:41 pm.
